What is speech Pathology?

 We’re Here to help

Speech Pathology is the practice of assessing, diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders. When people think of us, they usually think we just treat lisps. Although we do treat lisps, our area of practice is much broader. Speech Pathologists help people with a range of communication difficulties, this includes:

  • Speech and Articulation (how we move our muscles to speak)

  • Language comprehension and expression (how we understand and express language)

  • Literacy skills (reading and writing)

  • Fluency (flow of speech - e.g. stuttering)

  • Voice

  • Dysphagia (swallowing, chewing and mealtime management)

  • Feeding (Food aversion, picky eaters, progressing from breast/bottle feeding to solids)

  • Social language (How we use language - e.g. understanding sarcasm)

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication - AAC (Communication that is not verbal - e.g. communication devices, Key Word Sign etc.)
